This course is designed to train students’ speaking and critical thinking skills. It does so by providing students with opportunities to speak in public and present constructive critiques. The skill-building that is gained from such activities is strongly grounded in some theoretical models of public speaking and ensuing hands-on practices of public speaking.

1. The common language in this course is English; you are expected to speak and write in English. This rule applies to Japanese students as well as to international students. 2. This class is small but extraordinarily resourceful of cultural perspectives. Every one of you is a resource person and is encouraged to contribute to the cultural exchange. 3. Participation will be measured primarily by how much you contribute to the advancement of classroom activities. In cases of emergency in which you cannot attend a class, make sure you inform me in advance using the phone number or email address above. Excused absences are still absences. If your absences equal one third of the total number of classes (i.e., five), your final grade will be F without exception according to the university rules. 4. Notify me in advance if you cannot participate in a speech presentation. Only with an advance notice an arrangement for substitutive presentation can be made. 5. It is strictly prohibited to use dictionaries in class. Class time is spent much more productively sharing ideas and interacting with one another. 6. For an office conference, it is encouraged that you use the office hours shown above. However, you may make appointments with me for off-hour meetings.
