授業内容と方法
In this class, students are expected to improve 4 skills of English in various communicative settings. The activities for each skill include the following.
SPEAKING: Discussions with a partner or group members, presentations on various topics.
READING: Reading a variety of essays on contemporary issues.
LISTENING: Listening to various aural materials such as daily conversations and university lectures.
WRITING: Writing short essays in various genres based on on-line search.

The class will be conducted in English partially or entirely, and students are strongly encouraged to speak in English.

The use of information communication technologies (ICT) is an essential feature of this course. Students will be required to learn and master the components of cloud computing for education, such as how to use a computer, cloud storage, and productivity applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software etc.

評価基準と評価方法
Based on university regulations, grades will be calculated at a maximum of 100 points, and students must accumulate a score of at least 60 points in total to receive credit in the course. Those with a total score of less than 60 points will be graded with an F, 60-69 points a D, 70-79 points a C, 80-89 points a B, and 90 and above an A. Students will be eligible for course credit if they have attended more than two thirds of all class meetings.
The final grade will be based on the following:
● Campus-Wide English Proficiency Test (30%; evaluation of goals 2 and 3)
● Midterm & Final Exams (15% each, a total of 30%; evaluation of goals 2 and 3)
● Class presentations (15%; evaluation of goal 1)
● Composition assignments (15%; evaluation of goal 4)
● Other assignments (10%; evaluation of goals 1-4)

*NOTE* The Campus-Wide English Proficiency Test will be held on the 7th of August. Details will be announced in class. This test examines English proficiency in listening and reading, which will provide an objective evaluation of those language skills. ALL College English students are REQUIRED to take this test. The proficiency test score accounts for 30% of the total grade in the course.

Additional course materials and assignments will be made available in shared cloud folders and a dedicated Google Community. This section of 大学英語 may require students to engage on collaborative synchronous and asynchronous activities with learners from other places in Japan and overseas as part of the COIL Project and similar initiatives.

This is a tentative syllabus. Full discussion of course contents will be discussed in class.
Regular review and preparation is required for this lecture. Students should spend a substantial amount of time on homework.
Unexplained absences will severely compromise a student's grade. Check with a classmate (or me) about what you missed. Don't come unprepared saying "I was absent last week". That's no excuse, and you will be penalized for missing TWO classes.
Unexplained absence on quiz days may result in a grade of zero for that quiz.
