授業内容と方法
This course features a two week trip to Hawaii where students will attend academic lectures and take part in field trips.
Enrollment in this course is limited. Students who wish to enroll in this course must attend an orientation meeting (date to be announced soon). In the case of over-subscription, eligibility will be based in part on performance in English courses to date. An information session about this course will be held on Thursday April 18, from 12:00 to 12:30. Place: to be announced. All interested parties should attend.

The objectives of this course are the following:
A) extend students’ English language skills in the four primary areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing [communication skills, academic expertise] [Problem-Solving Ability]
B) Expand students’ vocabulary through daily independent interactions in English [autonomous learning, communication skills] [Problem-Solving Ability]
C) Introduce students to the use of English for participating in social discussions and other situations [social competence, local and international outlook] [Problem-Solving Ability]
D) Promote familiarity with American and Hawaiian culture. [local and international outlook] [Problem-Solving Ability]
E) Conduct surveys in English about independent research topics [autonomous learning, information literacy] [Problem-Solving Ability]
F) Keep a personal blog detailing their experiences [information literacy] [Problem-Solving Ability]

Subsumed within the above objectives are the 7 URGCC goals of 1) autonomous learning, 2) social competence, 3) local and international outlook, 4) communication skills, 5) information literacy, 6) problem solving ability, and 7) academic expertise.
 
評価基準と評価方法
Grading for this course will evaluate student accomplishment of the above goals and objectives in the following manner. Quizzes and Exams (evaluation of goals 4-7), Homework & Independent Assignments (evaluation of goals 1-7), Notebook (evaluation of goals 1-7), Participation (evaluation of goals 1-7). The relative weight of each of these areas will be announced at a later date.

事前学習
Students must attend scheduled orientations before departing for Hawaii, where they will learn how to make surveys and how to use the blogging software.
 
事後学習
After returning from Hawaii, students will be asked to complete surveys about their experience, give a presentation about their experiences and their research findings, and participate in post-program testing of their English skills (TOEIC).

This course will require students to engage on collaborative synchronous and asynchronous activities with learners from other universities in Japan and overseas as part of the COIL Project.
